Sharing a common love for Troy, the founding members established Troy Community Works! in 2007 with a general goal of preserving and enhancing the dynamic and vibrant core of the city: its buildings, businesses, and residential areas.TCW works with existing civic, business and community organizations to identify, organize, and accomplish projects beneficial to the community life of Troy’s downtown area.

From 2008 – 2010 we ran a homeowner foreclosure counseling center, first in partnership with the Homeownership Center of Greater Dayton, and then on our own with a trained housing counselor, Diane Flora. At this time TCW also employed an executive director. In 2010, TCW purchased the East Gate Building and renovations were started. In 2012, TCW put having an executive director on hold and has been board driven ever since.

In addition to homeowner counseling and the East Gate Building, TCW’s main community project was a Troy Fix It Day, held in conjunction with national Make a Difference Day. For several years, TCW has hosted this project with typically organized 120-150 volunteers to complete projects for area non-profit organizations. This program was made possible in part by financial and volunteer support of the Troy Foundation and the Troy United Way (since renamed the Miami County United Way), along with many volunteer groups.

TCW has also supported the efforts of other local organizations, including a partnership with the Troy Masonic Temple. The local Masonic Temple was seeking to do renovations, including a large scale window project. The organization had received some CDBG funds through the City of Troy, but it was not enough to finish their project. TCW was able to step in and act as a fiduciary agent for the Masons in order to allow their membership to collect tax deductible donations.
